To Whom It May Concern,
As you may already know, the South Carolina Department of Education recently labeled eight schools in North Charleston as “failing" and in need of intervention. As an elected School Board member who represents the North Area, I am looking for solutions to turn our failing schools around. I have already hosted two Town Hall meetings to get feedback from parents, teachers, community leaders and other stakeholders to determine what is needed in these failing schools.
One of the things we must do is learn from the best practices which have improved student performance in other high poverty areas. As such, I am organizing a trip for 35 community leaders on Friday, April 19 to analyze two single-sex public schools in Atlanta which have showed promise. We will visit the B.E.S.T. Academy for boys and the Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy to learn what those schools have done to improve student performance.
Since this is not a Charleston County School District sponsored trip, I am asking you to make a contribution to Bridgeport Foundation to make it possible. We need $4250 for a charter bus and $4375 for one night’s lodging. Please consider making an on-line contribution to support the school visits below or make out a check to Bridgeport Foundation. Together, we must find a way to set up our children for success in life.
